It was then developed with the castle at it's hub. The Welsh name for Tenby means "little town of the fishes" or "little fortress of the fish", names which refer to both the coastal location and the wall which surrounds the town; walls originally built during the 13th Century by the 1st Earl of Pembroke, William de Valence. The town would eventually develop into an important Welsh seaport, and more latterly a resort renowned for it's health benefits. In fact many walkways were created to facilitate healthy seaside walks, which also provided an education into the local flora and fauna for the botanists and geologists visiting the area.

Opting to stay in Tenby hotels is incredibly popular, especially during the summer months. This is largely down to the imbued sense of history of the town, not to mention the many visitor attractions and the exciting nightlife. Tenby is home to part of Britain's only National Park to be situated on the coast, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Being a coastal town also means there are various cruises available, allowing you to take in the the coastline, the sea life (seals, seabirds and porpoises) and visit the surrounding islands; St Catherine's Island and Caldey Island.

Caldey Island has been inhabited by a monastery and it's monks since the 5th Century, and still is today. It is possible to take a boat around the island or even land and spend some time exploring the island before returning on another boat. St Catherine's Fort was originally built as a defence against potential French invasions, and although it is no longer possible to visit as a member of the public, it still provides a beautiful view from the South Beach.

It would be impossible to talk about having a holiday in Tenby hotels without mentioning the long sandy beaches. Split into 3 beaches; North, South and Town, each one has a unique feel, but at the same time they are all beautiful and marked by long expanses of golden sand.

Activities In Tenby

There are a wide range of activities in Tenby, whether you are visiting as a family, as a couple or alone. As we have previously touched on Caldey Island we will not mention that here.

The first place to mention for activities in the Tenby area is an area slightly North of Tenby and was voted as Wales' Top Day Out in 2005 by the Wales Tourist Board. I am talking about Folly Farm, an attraction which combines a zoo with a traditional funfair, a farm and an adventure play park. The zoo contains more than 200 different animals, with more on the way, and visitors can attend feeding time demonstrations for some of the more interesting creatures. The fairground contains some vintage rides for anyone wanting a glimpse of a bygone era, and some retro thrills. Some noteworthy rides include a Golden Gallopers from 1922, chair-o-planes and the giant outdoor Helter Skelter. The farm allows visitors to handle some of the smaller animals and even bottle feed the baby ones. Finally the adventure play park comprises of both indoor and outdoor activities, which are well worth the trip out of Tenby.

A little bit closer to Tenby itself is another fantastic activities centre called Heatherton Country Park. There are a wide range of things to do here, including archery, bumper boats, baseball, go karting, golfing, horse riding, laser clay pigeon shooting, paintball, pistol firing, robot wars, indoor bowling, maze and a play area. So there's almost bound to be something you and your family will be able to enjoy here.

Throughout your stay in Tenby you could also pay a visit to the Silent World Aquarium and Reptile Collection. Housed inside a 19th Century chapel house close to the North Beach, this fascinating place is incredibly unique. Certainly I don't know of any other aquarium or reptile collection kept inside a chapel.!

Feel free to browse our site to find other fun activities in Tenby that are available to you on your visit here.
