TENBY ROADS TO RE-OPEN

 

Pembrokeshire County Council has announced that both The Norton and White Lion Street in Tenby are to re-open to traffic and pedestrians by the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

 

Both roads have been closed for almost six weeks following the fire which gutted one of the resort's best known landmarks, The Royal Gatehouse Hotel.

The building was devastated by the blaze which broke out over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in March.

 

For the past several days, the Council has employed specialist contractors to demolish the remaining structure because of the danger to public safety.

That demolition is now complete and it is intended to open both roads on Saturday morning

 

The Norton - which runs in front of the hotel site - is the only road into the town centre which can be accessed by lorries.

Since its closure, the County Council has been running a shuttle service for trade deliveries into the town centre. That service will now cease from Saturday.

 

The County Council has emphasised all along that its intention was to re-open the roads by the May Bank Holiday weekend.

 

Said Darren Thomas, the Authority's  Head of Highways and Construction: 'The coming weekend is a very important one to the business community and the economic wellbeing of Tenby and I am delighted we have achieved our aim.'
