Frustrated by the closure & subsequent demolition of Tenby’s last cinema, Val Coates Rees and I approached Kath & Chris Osborne (from Fourcroft Hotel) to see if films could be shown monthly at the hotel. The result is “Films4Tenby”, a community solution to a filmic challenge. After many years of successful film screenings at the Fourcroft Hotel, Films4Tenby has now moved to the de Valence Pavilion.

Films are now screened twice a month on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.

The first film was ‘Film Stars don’t die in Liverpool’ on May 1st which had an excellent audience, so hopefully this is the way of things to come!

There is now a membership scheme – you can join Films4Tenby for £10, the membership year running from May 1st – and then each film is £4. Otherwise you can pay £5 for each screening. No booking or advance payment is required or possible – please just pay on the door. Everyone is welcome.

The Fuchsia Caffe in the Mews has offered to provide a two course pre-screening meal for £10 at 6pm on screening nights – to allow plenty of time to wander around the corner to the de Valence to see the film. This must be booked in advance directly with them. Feedback from the first meal was very positive.

The bar is open at the de Valence for pre-screening drinks including tea and coffee.

There is now a large screen upstairs on the balcony of the de Valence for more intimate screenings, while the even bigger screen downstairs is available if needed.

We are intending to screen films recently shown at the commercial cinemas – we can show them as soon as they come out on DVD – and would be happy to receive suggestions for future screenings. We can be contacted on our web page, www.films4tenby.co.uk, or our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/filmsfortenby.

Films are programmed for the three months ahead – the current programme is:

    May 22ndFinal PortraitFILMS FOR TENBY

June 5thThe Greatest Showman on Earth

    June 19thDarkest Hour

July 3rdThe Sense of an Ending

    July 17thLady Macbeth

Alongside these regular screenings, a pop-up cinema movement also grew, “Rooms with a View”, which concentrates on showing occasional films with a special relevance to the venues. Including ‘Escape from Alcatrazon St Catherine’s Island, ‘Jawson Tenby Harbour, and ‘Vertigoin the Imperial Hotel. More are in the planning stages at the moment…

In collaboration with Tenby Library, several seasons of short films have been shown curated by ‘Future Shorts’. These consist of a collection of award winning new short films every quarter. The audience votes on their favourite film on the night, and this joins the votes from screenings held around the world to select an overall winner for that season. As far as we know, Tenby is the only place holding these screenings in Wales, and the next one is on May 19th at Tenby Library at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, £5 on the door, refreshments available for a donation to library funds.

From little acorns, what a lot can grow!
